Tech Tip: Sharing Files in Google Docs

When you are sharing a document with your classmates in Google Docs, the share settings can be overwhelming or confusing.  If you need to collaborate on the same document with others, these are the different ways you can share your document:

  1. Viewer - The individual can access the document and read its contents, but cannot make changes or add comments.
  2. Commenter - The individual can view the document and make suggestions/comments by highlighting areas of text.
  3. Editor - The individual can do everything that a commenter can to the document, but can also add content and edit text.
  4. Give temporary access - Allows someone to have temporary access to a document through a link.  They can only make comments on the document.
  5. Make owner - This makes the individual the new owner of the document.  They can do anything they want to the document and share it with others.

For extra help on sharing documents on Google Drive, you can view Google's tutorial on sharing files or view our Collaboration Resources guide.
