Effective Tips for Finals Week

Attend the Review Session
Here at Tiffin University, the majority of professors will have review sessions or outlines of study guides to go over prior to finals. These review sessions or documents are important to remember because these sessions could give you the opportunity to see what might be on the final exams. Some professors will provide their students with a lot of hints about what exactly will be on the exams. These hints can help students excel at their exams next week.

Start Early
Remember to start early! Exam schedules are out, and students can access the exam schedules at Tiffin University’s website. If a student starts ahead of schedule, this can help them to avoid procrastinating and start studying sooner than the night before an exam. A head start like this can help a student perform better on the exam!

Study Everything
Study guides are essential, but the notes that were discussed in class can be just as important. Study guides can only cover so much or suggest main concepts to learn; they are intended to show the way and fill in those blanks that students may need help with. Remember to go over notes and look at what may have been started or might be good to remember.

Create A Study Schedule and Follow It
Splitting the material into chunks will be beneficial in preparing for the exam. In this way, students can keep track of what they have accomplished instead of being overwhelmed by the scope of their final. The amount of content covered by the final exam can quickly feel overwhelming! Creating a study schedule can help students stay calm and not get overwhelmed, but how to make a schedule? Students can use calendars, write their plan on paper, or type it out on a document – anything that works for you to help you stay organized in preparation for finals!

Prioritize Study Time
Some exams or projects will be more difficult than others; some students will find different things easier. Consider what you think will be most challenging on each exam and budget your time accordingly. Once you’ve done that, think about all the factors that could be distractions and prioritize your time. This is something that a student can organize through their calendar to schedule time for studying and personal time.

Visualize
Every student has a different way of studying things that is more effective than others. Some students like to use flashcards – some great options include Circle In, Quizlet, or even old-fashioned hand-written flashcards. No matter which method you use, flashcards are an effective way to visualize the information on your exam and a crucial study aid. To internalize their notes even more thoroughly, some people read their notes or study guides aloud over and over until they understand the concepts. It is nice to visualize what and how to study, but it is also important to remember to take a break. Finals week is very stressful; remember to take an hour break or so between study times. Breaks will not only soothe the stress of looming exams – taking a moment to breathe also helps to internalize the information we’ve just studied!
