Book Borrowing

Information on borrowing materials through the library.

Your Library Barcode

Your library barcode is used for accessing your library account, requesting items, checking out materials, and accessing select resources off-campus. It is your university ID number followed by TUP (Example: 000123456TUP). For example, Joe Smith with a university ID number of 000123456 would have a library barcode of 000123456TUP. If you are unsure of your university ID number, you can visit self-service>My Profile>Account Information. You can also contact the library at library@tiffin.edu.

OhioLINK Pick-Up Anywhere

How To Request Pick Up Anywhere

When placing a request to borrow physical materials from OhioLINK, patrons have the option of selecting a different OhioLINK library as their retrieval location for requested materials. This feature is especially convenient for online students and staff that may be geographically far from the Pfeiffer Library, but live close to another OhioLINK library.

To take advantage of this state-wide delivery service option, use the drop-down menus to select the Pickup Institution (college/university name) and Pickup Location (branch campus/campus location) that is the most convenient for you for picking up your item(s) when placing a request. Keep in mind that requested materials typically take 4-6 days to arrive at their destination, so please plan accordingly when selecting your pick-up location during semester breaks.

Please note that once you select a pick-up location and submit your request, the item will be sent directly to that library. To change your pick-up location, you would have to cancel the original request and re-request the item with a new pick-up location selected.

Retrieving Items

You will receive an email to your @tiffin.edu email account when the item is available for pickup at the location you selected. Be prepared to show your Tiffin University ID card or driver's license to the library staff at the pickup location when checking out materials.

Returning Items

When you take advantage of selecting a different pickup location for your OhioLINK requests, you may also return those items to the pickup location you designated, and your library account will be updated to reflect that the items were returned. You may also choose to return OhioLINK materials at any OhioLINK location, but please note that the status of materials returned at a different location will only be updated once the item has arrived at the owning library. This could result in late fines if items are returned using this method too close to the due date.

Locations

The OhioLINK membership includes more than 90 college and university libraries throughout the state of Ohio. Check out the OhioLINK locations map to find the pickup location that is closest to you!

Visiting Patron Borrowing

Check-out

As part of an OhioLINK member institution, you also have the option of visiting and checking out circulating materials from other OhioLINK libraries in-person without placing a request beforehand. Simply carry your Tiffin University ID card with library barcode with you when visiting another OhioLINK library, and present it at the time of checkout. The library staff will be able to check material out to you on your TU library account.

Returning Items

You may also choose to return your OhioLINK materials at any OhioLINK library. Simply return them to the designated area of any OhioLINK library (typically the circulation desk or book return) and the library staff will ship the material back to the owning library for you. Please note that in this case, your library account and the item's status will not be updated until they arrive at the owning library. This could result in late fees if the item is returned using this method too close to the due date.

Borrowing at a Distance

Defining "Distance"

You are considered a "distance" user at Tiffin University when you:

  • Are enrolled in an online or hybrid course, AND
  • Live a distance beyond a "reasonable" commute to campus or pick-up anywhere location (roughly 60 miles)

Distance users hold the same access to the electronic collection as campus users. Distance users can have access to various print resources if they are:

  • Willing to commute to campus (free pickup), OR
  • Willing to pay for shipping costs (in cases where you are more than 60 miles from campus or pickup anywhere location), AND
  • Living within the United States

Borrowing Privileges

Distance users have the same limitations on the number of items which can be checked out/requested at a given time. This is based on your user status with the university (undergraduate, graduate, faculty/staff, etc.).

Distance users outside of the United States do not have borrowing rights to print resources at this time.

Circulating Materials

OhioLINK

OhioLINK lending restrictions apply uniformly from campus to distance users, with the acknowledgment that distance users who have requested materials be shipped to their home may have a longer waiting period in order to receive their items.

InterLibrary Loan

InterLibrary Loan lending restrictions apply uniformly from campus to distance users, with the acknowledgment that distance users who have requested materials be shipped to their home may have a longer waiting period in order to receive their items.

Shipping, Fees, and User Responsibilities

If you elect to have an OhioLINK or InterLibrary Loan item sent to your home, you must:

  • Check your University email frequently so that librarians can confirm shipping address and methods.
  • Pay for shipping - both directions

Fines, and the procedures for correcting those fines, still apply if materials are lost or damaged.

Course Reserves

Course reserves are currently unavailable for distance users. Users wishing to utilize materials placed on reserve must commute to campus in order to use the materials.

There are currently no reserve options available for faculty teaching online courses.

How to Request as a Distance Student

If you fulfill the requirements to have material shipped to you, the steps are similar to Pick-up anywhere. However, instead of changing your pick-up institution, simply change your pick up location to "Tiffin Distance Education." If this is your first time using it, a librarian will contact you shortly.
