A guide on how to conduct a job search efficiently using different job search databases.

Job Searching in Ohio

If your career aspirations are keeping you in the area, there are plenty of resources that can help you find jobs in the state of Ohio.  The following websites post jobs that are specific to the state:

OhioMeansJobs

As part of the American Job Center Network, OhioMeansJobs is a platform where you can create a professional profile, search for and apply for jobs in several fields.  It contains full time jobs, part-time work, and internships.

Creating a Profile

To create a profile on OhioMeansJobs:

  1. Click on "My Profile" in the top right corner of the home page.
  2. Click on "Register Here" below the sign in button.
  3. Create an account using a professional email address, password, name, address, and contact information.  It will also ask for your employment status and career information (if applicable).
  4. Click "Create account."

Features

The features are located at the top of the site's home page and are categorized by demographic.

  • For Job Seekers:
    • Find a Job: Provides the primary tools that can assist you in finding the "right" job.  This includes creating a site profile, using career planning tools, and drafting professional cover letters.  To search for jobs, fill in the fields on the search page.  You can search by job title, keywords, location, state, radius, or any combination of those.  The advanced search function lets you search by company name, industry, career/education level, and occupation.  If you have participated in the National Career Readiness Program, you can apply your subject scores to your search as well.
    • Find a Job Center: OhioMeansJobs has employment agencies that are stationed throughout the state of Ohio.  They assist job seekers, employers, and students with job training and professional recruitment.  To find out if there is a job center near you, use the interactive map or list of counties to select your area.
    • Build Your Career: Contains information regarding career planning, military service, preparing for college, and job preparation for restored citizens and Golden Buckeyes (older adults).
    • Practice Your Skills: Lets you assess your current list of "marketable" career skills and helps you align them with a suitable career path.
    • Learn About Benefits: Provides information about unemployment benefits and how to claim unemployment.

  • For Students:
    • Explore Careers: Provides career exploration tools such as a list of career types, career exploration videos, and career pathways.
    • K-5th Grades: Contains videos and interactive games about career awareness.
    • 6th-8th Grades: Contains career exploration videos and interactive games.
    • 9th-12th Grades: Provides tools for career exploration and planning.
    • Staff & Professionals: Contains video and multimedia tools for teachers.
  • News & Events: Contains website news and information about events that can help with professional development.  These include workshops and career fairs.  You can register for these events through your personal profile.
  • Help Center: A portal with frequently asked questions, a live chat feature, and a "contact us" form.

 

 

Ohio Job Network

Ohio Job Network is a platform for job postings in Ohio and provides career services for job seekers and employers.  It is different from OhioJobNetwork.org, which is a platform for career services.

Creating an Account

Creating an account allows you to add your resume to your profile and notifies you of new job postings.  To create an account with Ohio Job Network:

  1. Click on "Register" on the website's home page.
  2. Select "I am a job seeker."
  3. Fill out the fields with your education and demographic information.
  4. Click "Save Registration."

 

Searching for Jobs

To search for jobs on Ohio Job Network:

  1. Type in your search terms using the basic search function on the home page.  You can change the job location as well, but Ohio will be the default option.  If you would like to conduct a more specific search, use the advanced search function located below the search bars.  Or, you can browse open positions by clicking on "Browse categories" or "Browse locations."
  2. Narrow down your search results further by using the filters at the top of the search results page.
  3. To view a position's details or to apply, click on the job title.

Ohio.gov

Ohio.gov contains useful resources for job seekers, individuals with disabilities, and veterans.  You cannot search for open job positions, but it contains helpful guidance in the process of job searching.  It also includes information on labor law and unemployment compensation.  On the jobs page, scroll down to view the page's different features.  Each feature will have featured content, but you can click "See other" to view all available content.

 

Features

  • Job Searches: Contains answers to frequently asked questions pertaining to job searching on popular job search platforms (OhioMeansJobs, Careers.Ohio.gov, etc.).
  • Unemployment: A platform where you can file for unemployment benefits online and view important information about unemployment benefits.
  • Labor Law: Discusses laws pertaining to minimum wage, working minors, and other labor laws in the state of Ohio.
  • Professional Licensing: A platform where you can apply for and renew Ohio professional licenses and business permits.  It also lists the professional licenses that are available through eLicense Ohio.

Ohio Careers Job Search

Ohio Careers Job Search allows you to search for open job positions in Ohio.  You can also browse all available jobs by clicking on "View All Jobs" on the home page.

 

Creating an Account

To use some of the website's individual features, you will need to create an account.  To create a new account with Ohio Careers Job Search:

  1. On the home page, click on "sign in" in the top right corner.
  2. Accept the terms of the privacy and security notice by choosing "I accept."
  3. Click on "New user" under the sign in window.
  4. Create a username, password, and email address to be associated with the account.
  5. Click "Register" to finish creating your account.

 

Basic Search

To conduct a basic search, use the search bars on the home page to search by keyword, location, or organization.  Once you type in your search terms, use the filters on the left side to limit your results.  Filters include:

  • Posting date
  • Organization/agency
  • Location (county, city)
  • Job field

 

Advanced Search

To conduct an advanced search:

  1. Click on the "advanced search" icon on the right side of the home page.
  2. Type in your search criteria and click on "search for jobs."
  3. View your search results by sorting them by job title, schedule, or location.
  4. To apply for a job, click "apply" or add the position to your job cart to be viewed later.  To do this, you will need to sign into your Ohio Careers Job Search account.
