How to Do Proper APA

Many first-year college students have only written in MLA format for their English classes from high school. In college, however, most assignments will use APA formatting. Today this blog will discuss some good pointers on how to do proper APA format!

The Little Things
The first few things that you should automatically check are your margins, font style, and spacing. Every program that you may use, whether Word, Google Docs, etc., should automatically have one-inch margins set for all sides. Always double-check to be sure, however. Font style is just as important as margins; many different fonts are accepted (Calibri, Arial, Times New Roman, and Georgia), but here at TU it is preferred to be Times New Roman. The last little add-on is line spacing. To have proper APA formatting, your entire paper should be double-spaced; this includes your title page, block quotations, and the reference page.

Title Page Setup:
Your title page should have the paper’s title in bold. Next, press return twice, as there should be a blank space between the title and the author's name. After your name comes the institution, class, professor, and date; finally, the title page should be in the center of the paper.

Reference List Setup
The reference page should be titled “References” and exists on its own page. Ensure that the reference page is double-spaced; the text of the reference page should share the same font style size as the rest of the paper. In addition, all your sources must be in alphabetical order and formatted to include a hanging indent.
