You may have noticed a new face at our main desk if you've been in the library recently. James Gilmer started with us on August 17 as a User Services Librarian.
A User Services Librarian is responsible for user experience in the library. James conducts class visits as requested by our faculty and is the friendly face you see at the library's desk each day. He helps with circulation-related tasks, research support, and library programming, among many other things!
We asked James to write a bio for our blog, and this is what he wrote:
I am a professional librarian and Byzantinist, Dungeons & Dragons nerd, and 3D printing enthusiast and brand new to the Tiffin area! I earned a Masters of Library & Information Sciences from Kent State University along with a Masters of Arts in Ancient & Classical History from the American Public University System and a Masters of Humanities from Wright State University. My thesis projects included an historical analysis of the theory and practice of Byzantine warfare during the tenth and eleventh centuries — drawing upon a close reading of historical chronicles and Byzantine military manuals — and a translation of the Hyle Historias, a twelfth century Byzantine chronicle authored by Nikephoros Bryennios.
Prior to Tiffin University, I taught courses in Greco-Roman culture, war & society, and mythology at Ohio University’s Lancaster campus. In addition to Greco-Roman literature and Byzantine military history courses, my teaching and research interests include Greco-Roman and Byzantine magic, monsters & heroes, and the concept of military virtue in Greek, Roman, and Byzantine sources.
Outside of Tiffin University, I enjoy campaigning — both as player and as dungeon master — Dungeons & Dragons, 3D printing, and the intersection of the two.
Please stop in this semester and give him a wonderful welcome!
