What's New at Pfeiffer Library?

Flashback Friday: The Tystenac Poetry

Poetry is the main topic for this week's #FlashbackFriday!  You may have heard of The Tystenac, Tiffin University's student-run newspaper.  While it was initially a print newspaper, the university now publishes it digitally.  However, Pfeiffer Library has some print issues going back to the 1930s.  The publication focuses on university news and information about campus events.  If you are ever curious about the most recent version of The Tystenac, you can view its website here.  In the early 1900s, one consistent column of The Tystenac was poetry.  The publication staff would submit poems that they have written and they would be about any topic.  In some cases, they reflected the students' views about a certain topic.  Some poems were short and sweet, while others took up an entire section of a page.  They would typically be printed on the second page of the newspaper, so readers always knew where to find them.  We have included some sample poems below from the 1938-1939 editions of The Tystenac.  Would you feel comfortable publishing your own creative writing, just like The Tystenac staff?

This is a typical cover page for The Tystenac in the 1930s.  If you focus on the headlines, the articles cover all aspects of campus life.

The Tystenac Publication Staff: October, 1939

The Tystenac always reserved a section to list the student staff and their roles in compiling the publication.  Members of the staff would change or rotate every academic year, but some students remained on staff for more than a year.

The Tystenac Poems: "A Simple Prayer" and "Mr. Groundhog's Shadow"

These poems were published in 1939 by Evelyn Lea, a previous member of the editorial staff for The Tystenac.
